The Don Berner Big Band is the city of Edmonton’s flagship large jazz ensemble. An Edmonton jazz favourite for over a decade, the Don Berner Big Band became the first professional large jazz ensemble in Edmonton to have a fully programmed concert season in 2021. Featuring Edmonton’s best jazz musicians, the Don Berner Big Band presents an eclectic season drawing from classic big band and swing repertoire, collaborations with contemporary and pop artists, adaptations of works from other mediums, and more with a variety of special illustrious guests.

Favourite memory in the DBBB
It’s a tie between playing with Tommy Banks at Grand Prairie Regional College, and the concert the band did to raise funds to support the fire relief efforts during the Fort McMurray wildfires.
Why you should support this person
Matt is completely integral to the DBBB. Besides his fine musicianship, Matt is a great team player and contributes greatly to the morale of the band. He acts as the musician’s rep to the board and has a deep understanding of HR issues. Further, he’s in the age bracket that can easily be overlooked wherein you’re not considered an elder statesman of your industry, nor a young up and comer, “merely” a VERY fine professional. It is IMPERATIVE to give musicians in that bracket support for the health of the Edmonton music ecosystem.
